But I'm a health and fitness nut....

In December 2010 I was 190 lbs and 12% body fat. I was a vegetarian and a former vegan. I took vitamins and drank lots of water and I worked out 6 days a week, religiously, alternating between weightlifting and cardio. I made certain to include lots of natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatories in the foods that I ate.

That December I was feeling the beginnings of a cold. There was some nagging little fever thing trying to take hold and start in on ravaging my health. I held it off with the usual remedies of vitamin c and echynatia. By January the feverish feeling was not going away and I was beginning to think I might need antibiotics. So I went and saw my doctor. Everything checked out normal and they did a blood test just to make sure everything was good. A couple of days later I get a call from the doctor saying that there was an indicator that the Thyroid levels in my blood might be high. They ran some additional tests and sure enough My thyroid levels were off the chart (also known as hyperthyroidism). At the time I thought, "oh cool, it's not a virus. we can fix this right up." That was my most naive moment. By February I had seen an endocryinologist and had been diagnosed with the further complication of Graves Disease. My life has not been the same.

This blog is gong to document the unfolding story of the struggle, pain, triumph and despair of the way my thyroid is kicking my ass.

I am now 210 lbs and about 20% body fat. I can barely run up a flight of stairs and I have been put on steroids to attempt to bring down the inflammation that has caused double vision in my eyesight.

I am 48 years old. This was me 2 years ago.
